Ministry Wounds & Trauma

Counseling Support for Pastors, Ministry Leaders & Their Families

Ministry is a calling—one filled with beauty, purpose, and deep spiritual reward. But if you’ve served in church leadership or lived alongside someone who has, you also know this truth:

Ministry can break your heart

The same place that brings connection, transformation, and blessing can also bring deep wounding, isolation, and burnout. You pour your life—and your family’s life—into serving others, walking with people through the highest of highs and lowest of lows. While the calling is sacred, it often comes with invisible costs.

The Hidden Wounds of Ministry

Pastors, ministry leaders, and their families often carry heavy, unspoken burdens:

  • Constant pressure to meet expectations and never disappoint
  • Criticism masked as “feedback”
  • Betrayal by trusted friends or leadership
  • Watching people walk away—from the church, from your family
  • Trauma from witnessing crisis, grief, or abuse
  • Feeling muzzled—unable to speak truth, defend, or express hurt
  • The toll of living in a “glass house” where every action is watched and scrutinized
  • Isolation that leads to depression, anxiety, PTSD, addictions or burnout

Did you know that pastors experience PTSD at rates comparable to first responders? Some say even more because pastors are afraid to say anything out of fear of being perceived as weak or losing their job. Ministry trauma is real—and it’s often overlooked, minimized, or spiritualized away.

And the pain doesn’t stop with the pastor. Spouses and children carry these wounds too. You may have felt unseen, unheard, or expected to “just smile and support” all while wondering who is attacking my spouse or parent, no matter the cost to your mental and emotional well-being.

when ministry hurts

You may feel alone. Exhausted. Disillusioned. You might question your identity, your calling, or even your faith. Maybe you’ve said to yourself:

  • “This wasn’t supposed to happen in the church.”
  • “Why does it hurt this much?”
  • “How do I heal from something that was supposed to be holy?”

If that’s where you are—you’re not weak. You’re not failing. And you’re not alone.

I Understand Because I’ve Been There

I’ve been a pastor’s wife for nearly 30 years. I’ve lived the glass house life. I’ve raised my children in it. I’ve felt the joy of seeing God move powerfully—and I’ve also felt the deep pain of betrayal, exclusion, judgment, and disillusionment. I’ve walked through ministry trauma that nearly broke me. And I’ve found healing.

Not by ignoring it. Not by pushing through. But by facing it, grieving it, and doing the hard work of restoring my heart, identity, and trust.

That’s the healing I offer others. Through counseling, I help pastors, leaders, ministry spouses and adult children name the wounds, unpack the trauma, and find peace and clarity again.
